Well now, you can do both and feel good about helping the victims of the Hurricane Katrina natural disaster, as well as help yourself.

My 6yo daughter, Sarah, says "Luscious is my grandpa!" He's a towering teddy bear of a man, always dressed in bibs and serving. His local vocation to serve the poor has always been more than he could really handle, but being the kind of man he is, he's begun a collection center now for Katrina victims. Healing In The Lobby

I've been wondering how to talk about Hurricane Katrina. Last week I wrote an entire article about it, and just as my laptop ran out of battery power, I moved to another location to plug my laptop into an outlet. When I opened the lid of my laptop, NoteTab Pro, the program I use to write my articles with, had thrown an error. I hadn't saved the document. All was lost. I let it go and went on to finish a different article.

Today I was presented with another opportunity to write about Hurricane Katrina, so here it is. I was running behind and my client was sitting in the lobby reading last week's TIME magazine.

When I came out to get her for the session, she said she didn't need any help after reading the magazine and looking at the pictures.

She was incredibly moved by what she read and saw. She said, "After looking at some of those pictures, I realized that what I am struggling with pales in comparison to the tragedy which continues for those people down there."

She was deeply touched and began to talk about how her family was participating in several disaster relief efforts. In fact, her 9 year old daughter helped run a hot dog stand last week, made $75 and gave it all to help those suffering from Hurricane Katrina. She spoke of other family activities that have brought her family closer.

This is a family which has taken this disaster and turned it into a intimacy building workshop within their family. Boy, their family needed it, but who would have guessed the blessing would come from such a horrible incident.

We spent about half our session discussing how she was impacted by the TIME article. I noticed that she humbled herself in a beautiful way. This natural disaster allowed her to put her current struggles into a new perspective. How many of us can do that?

We're so accustomed to our own struggles and the daily grind that often we lose the ability to look outside our own needs and consider our pain within the perspective of the great pain being felt in the world around us.

So, my client had a "Perspective Jump!" Quite a big one actually.

I'm not trying to dismiss your needs or your pain. I'm simply pointing out that the perspective you CHOOSE is paramount to overcoming any dilemma you may be facing.

What perspective will you choose when life gets tough?
