Walking Our Talk

I have been noticing a pattern around the neighborhood I live in. I took note and have kept track now for about a month. And, it's true, after the recycle truck comes through the neighborhood on Thursdays picking up recycling, recyclables are strewn all over the neighborhood. In essence, there's a tremendous amount of litter left on our land.

My 5 1/2 year old daughter also noticed the trash on a walk we were on the other day, as we were collecting trash while we walked along. She asked why there was so much trash. After explaining to her, she called me into accountability and said, "You should talk to them daddy."

Personally I find it ironic that a company with an environmental mission statement is one of the biggest litterers I know. But, it made me think.

All of us have goals, personal missions, and sometimes, even when we think we're living up to them we're actually walking a different talk. We think we're doing or teaching one thing, when, in actuality, we're teaching something entirely different.

There are so many examples. The parent who believes he's teaching discipline by yelling at his son when his son disobeys, when actually he's teaching disrespect within his very own approach.

It made me take a look at several of my current goals. Are the actions I take really accomplishing what I hope for? Am I teaching, inadvertently, lessons to my children that I don't want to be teaching. We're always teaching something. It's up to us to be aware of what it is we're doing and how it impacts the quality of our lives and the lives around us.

So, in taking my own advice.... or, err... the advice of my young daughter, I'm off to find the mailing address of the main office for Rumpke Recycling so I can send off that letter. I'll be asking them about their mission statement and share my observations with them. I hope their actions come into alignment with what I know they really want to be about.
